Well I decided to just go ahead and do it. I’ve been considering it for a while and when I saw a great sale on Amazon I decided to strike and buy a Surface Pro. Not the new Pro 3, the original. It was exactly what I needed. Same size as my RT, just a tad thicker, and uses the same keyboard.
The performance difference between the RT and the Pro is immediately apparent. That’s not to say the RT is slow, it’s not, but the Pro just works more efficiently, and I appreciate that. Both units have their strengths and weaknesses. In fact the RT may be a better choice for some people. Here is my short list of Pro’s and Con’s for each device.
Surface RT
Pros:
Slimmer and lighter than the Pro
Battery life is amazing. I never concerned myself with it. I charged it whenever I felt like it.
Flip the keyboard down, if equipped, and it instantly wakes back up, ready to go.
Cons:
Web browsing can lag a bit.
Locked into using programs from the app store and it does not always offer an app that meets your needs.
Glorified cell phone hardware runs well enough, and quite fast, but feels just a tad slower than it should.
Surface Pro
Pros:
The hardware. It feels like a mid-high range laptop.
You can run virtually any program you want since it runs a standard processor.
Higher resolution than the RT.
Play actual games!
Cons:
Battery Life is not great.
Takes longer to wake back up.
So that is my short synopsis of the two tablets. Both run Windows 8.1. The RT feels much more suited to tablet use than the Pro due to it’s lower weight and slimmer design. The Pro is still good as a tablet even though your arm may get tired of holding it, but when you need to get real work done you will be glad you have it.
I realize both of these tablets have been out for a while now but as they are getting cheaper and cheaper, and they are still relevant, I felt it was worth a post.
