Ryse: Son of Rome

Ryse was recently released for PC and I got my hands on a copy, or rather my PC got it’s hard drive on a download…or whatever. Either way we got it, and I’ve been playing a lot of it. It’s still the only game that I wanted from the Xbox One lineup and almost bought an XBone just to get it. Luckily I found it was released on PC and Steam had it on sale for $19. Score! I’ll still pick up an XBone when Halo 5 releases I’m sure.

It runs very well to my surprise. PC ports are usually not optimized the best but this runs well on my system which has a AMD Phenom II x4 945 running at 3.3Ghz, 8GB of DDR3 and the GTX 750ti SC video card that was featured in the install video about a month back. Not a major powerhouse compared to what’s out there, but more than enough to keep up with the latest games at very playable resolutions and frame rates. I did notice some frame rate issues at first but a few helpful guides on the internet had that sorted quickly.

Gear of War: Judgment

How excited was I to pick up this game? Very! I love Gears of War. I do, but I love it for the single player campaign. I have played very little multiplayer. I have nothing against it, but it’s just not why I play games.

I had been looking forward to a new Gears game for a while and when I brought it home I set it on the shelf and looked at it like a kid waiting on Christmas. I had to finish the current game I was playing first as I hate having two unfinished games going on at the same time. So I finished up Wolfenstein on my PS4 and happily threw the new Gears into the 360.

After an update, as is the norm, I was in. I played through the first few areas and immediately felt the difference between this one and the others. I get it, it’s a spin-off done by a different developer. It is going to be different, but sometimes that can still be just as good. Call of Duty World at War comes to mind. Other than raining grenades it’s just as good as any Infinity Ward Call of Duty. Black OPs is also as good or better in my opinion. Continue reading →

My adventure with tablets OR what lead me to buy last gen technology, and love it.

Surface RT ScreenshotMy first tablet was some cheap android tablet I bought off the Staples website way back when I used to work for them and their Rewards Card was actually useful. It had a resistive touch screen which worked ok as long as I wasn’t trying to scroll with it. A stylus worked great but I could never find a good case for it that would hold both the tablet and stylus.

I soon graduated to an iPad 2 when the iPad 3 came out and the 2 took a price cut. I loved it. In fact I sold my netbook after two weeks with the iPad once I realized it did everything I needed in a mobile solution, or so I thought. It would play YouTube, Netflix, Hulu and even work as a Word Processor in a pinch. The web browser was fairly robust for a tablet I though and rarely encountered anything it could not do.

However after a while I was missing being able to use websites with Flash, type with any sense of speed and print directly from it. I told myself I could love without the flash if I could solve the other issues. I tried using different print utilities with varied success and never could find a case with a keyboard that would still be slim enough for my liking.

So I have had the 8.1 preview for about a week now and feel I’ve used it enough to talk about it at least semi-intelligently. I am not a power user but I do use my phone all day for various tasks. This isn’t a full review of all the new stuff on WP8.1 but rather my experience with it as it pertains to me and how I use my phone. So I will break this down into the areas that have impacted me.

Internet Explorer 11

The most used app on my phone is Internet Explorer and with WP8.1 you practically get the full blown IE11 which comes in very handy. I enjoy using the internet on my phone and rarely encounter a web page that it will not load. Adobe Flash is still an opportunity for it but youtube, NHL.com and other websites that use video all load fine and play fine. It loads HTML5 content without any issues.

My favorite part about IE11 on Windows Phone is that you can load the desktop version of the websites by default, which may not seem like a big deal at first as most phones do that, but with IE11 they actually act like the desktop sites. A big win in this area is that Youtube will block some content from being able to play on mobile devices even if viewing the desktop version of the site, at least that has been my experience on Android phones and tablets and the ipad. But on IE11, I just load the desktop version and that video is no longer blocked. It even plays in browser if I want instead of auto-full screen just like on a real computer. It’s a little thing, but it makes a huge impact with how I use my phone. Continue reading →
