The Daily Goat Show

Video Game Culture, Reviews and Media

The Order: 1886

A little late, especially as I finished the game a while ago, but I feel the game is worth talking about still. The game received a lot of press talk about how plain or boring it is. Personally I do not get it. I think the game is just plain fun.

The first thing to know is that this game is short. And while it has received criticism because of it I don’t think it matters, in fact I kind of prefer that. It’s a great weekend or long afternoon experience that is worth playing again I feel. The strength of the game is in its presentation. Video games are a form of entertainment and part of that entertainment factor comes in the story and how it’s told. The Order nails that part of the equation. A lot of games get a bit convoluted and overly deep with the story that by the end of it I’m lost and left wondering why exactly the main character was on this adventure anyway.

Dark Souls 2 New Game Plus. Why you so good?!

In anticipation for Bloodborne I fired up Dark Souls 2 and decided to jump into New Game Plus. I had no idea this game had Falconers in it. I immediately found out.

I also found out about the increased damage. While my build was still capable of dealing substantial damage my character was no longer capable of taking it. I would go down easy, much easier than I expected. But that is ok, it challenged me to take my build into a different route. I decided to focus more on defense this time around since offense was pretty well sorted at this point.

Thief – Throwback Thursday

We are not throwing it back as far as last time. This time around we are looking back at the franchise reboot for Thief on the PC, XBone and PS4.

I played the first game in the series back in 1998 and enjoyed it a lot even though I couldn’t even beat the first level without cheats. I was not good at games back then but that didn’t stop me. I knew what I was playing was something different and new.

Resident Evil Remastered (Re-Remake?)

It’s back! The game that will seemingly never die has been released yet again. Just like last time I’m thrilled. I know what I’m getting and since this is just an upscaled version of the Gamecube version I have no fears of it being re-imagined (ruined).

The game starts up and looks just like the Gamecube version with the low-res zombie waking up on a gurney perfectly intact. My nostalgia senses were going crazy at that point. The game feels just like the older one with one major difference that I refuse to accept.

Call of Duty Ghosts

I’m on the delayed plan when it comes to Call of Duty. I don’t play the multiplayer so paying full price for a five hour campaign does not seem worth it to me but after a few price cuts, and a sale, the price finally fell in line…usually once the new one comes out. So I can’t wait to play Advanced Warfare next year!

For a series that’s known more for its multiplayer, I always have a good time with the campaign. It’s a shame that many people never even play it. Every single Call of Duty campaign I’ve played has been entertaining in some way. They later games seem to cram in a lot of different game styles, like a sample platter of the things you can do in multiplayer, into the campaign in a way that usually works seamlessly. It’s nice to break things up.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

I recently purchased this on a Steam sale and let it sit in my library for a bit. I decided to jump in. Hours later and I had to force myself to put it down and type this. I could not be more impressed by what the guys and gals over at Obsidian Entertainment did with the license. It really does feel like you are playing an episode of the show.

It picks up right where the Black Friday Trilogy ended. You don’t need to have watch the shows to understand the game but they are very entertaining so I’d recommended it regardless. In fact if you are a fan of the show you will be treated to almost non-stop fan service. There is such a history surrounding this show that it has a virtually bottomless bag of references to pull from. Continue reading

PS3 Heat Sinks

Bake a Playstation 3 back to life!

In this short video I take a PS3 apart and fix it by baking it in the oven. I would not recommend that anyone does this without proper supervision or the experience to know what you are doing. While this MAY fix your system, you can also end up destroying the motherboard, starting a fire, breaking your oven, releasing the Kraken and may other bad things.

What I basically do is strip the system down to it’s bare motherboard and bake it in the oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, let it cool and reassemble. I have done this repair before on this unit so I could retrieve my saved games off of it. It worked for that and as a movie machine but playing a game for 30minutes was too much for it. I’m actually surprised it worked after baking it a 2nd time. Who knows how long it will last this time.

Should you choose to perform this repair, it is at your own risk and I take no responsibility. 🙂

Destined to be Alone: Day Three

The Venus Underground

The Venus Underground

Day three took me to Venus and I finally fought a different enemy! Woohoo!! Technically the moon had new enemies but let’s face it, the Hive are basically the Fallen in different clothes. I’m kidding, but it did feel like I fought more Fallen on the moon than Hive.

But the new guys are Vex and they are probably the creepiest enemies in the game so far. They don’t look creepy necessarily but they all just march, in great numbers, right for you. And shame on me for forgetting to screenshot them.

DGS Plays – P.T. Set 1

Today we play around in the Playable Trailer (P.T.) (PS4) for the upcoming Silent Hill game from the minds of Guillermo del Toro and, more importantly for gamers, Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid infamy.

There is no commentary, just gameplay, as this “demo” is all about atmosphere and I didn’t want to ruin that. This isn’t a complete playthrough but it covers a good bit of the demo, I don’t want to spoil it all. You should really play it yourself to experience it. I played it during the day, in a well-lit room with other people in it and I still felt creeped out. Enjoy!

The Future of Single Player?

When I think of gaming, I picture myself sitting in a chair, or on the floor, holding my controller and staring at my TV. I’m either shooting bad guys, climbing a wall, racing a car, anything! And I’m being captivated by the narrative, letting it take me wherever it wants to.

My favorite part of gaming is experiencing the story. Maybe its because of when I grew up, but I just can’t get that same feeling when playing multiplayer games, even story driven ones. When I was a kid multiplayer meant when my character died, my brother or best friend then played Luigi. That was fine because the story was basic and easy to follow. Go through a few levels, hop over Bowser and get disappointed when the princess is in another castle. Simple.
